For many of us in Asheville, the first sighting of a pest or wildlife animal in our home can cause a feeling of uneasiness and sinking dread. Where one pest is found, more are sure to follow. Luckily, there are a few things we can do to stop an infestation before it becomes a major issue in your home.
Below are three tips for keeping your home secure into the New Year.
- Check your cabinets for old packages. Outdated grain and flour products can often be the culprit of infestations. Certain species of bugs are attracted to these materials and will burrow into old boxes. Even if the box is secure, open it up and check it out. You may have an infestation that you can’t see from the outside. The best course of action is to store these products in sealable or glass containers.
- Check your faucets and surrounding areas for leaks. Some species of bugs are drawn to water. Make sure that you never leave faucets running for this reason and that leaks are fixed promptly! Make sure to check under the cabinets of your sinks as well, where real problems could be happening that you don’t normally see!
- Many pests make their way into your home through small cracks and crevices that are part of your foundation. You may notice the cracks, but don’t think anything of them. In reality, they can cause serious structural damage and be an entry point for any number of bug species and other pests. You may want to call in an expert to check on the cracks and to find others that you may not be aware of.
